Oleg Itzhoki, born 7 January 1983 in Moscow, is a Russian and American economist, professor at the University of California, Los Angeles. He holds a PhD in economics. From 2009 to 2020 Oleg Evgenievich taught at Princeton University. He is the first Russian to be awarded the John Bates Clark Medal (2022).
- In 1990-1999 he studied at Moscow school No. 1289 with advanced study of English.
- In 2003 he graduated from the Faculty of Economics of Moscow State University and a year later completed a Master’s programme at the New Economic School. In 2004, he enrolled as a postgraduate student at Harvard University, where in 2009, under the supervision of Professor Elhanan Helpman, he defended his thesis on “International Trade and Labour Markets: Unemployment, Inequality and Redistribution” and received a PhD in Economics.
- He was an Assistant Professor from 2010 to 2017 and a Professor at Princeton University from 2017 to 2020. He has been a visiting professor at the University of Chicago (2012-2013) and Stanford University (2017-2018).
- As of September 2019, he is a professor at the University of California, Los Angeles.
Scientific activity
- His research area is macroeconomics and international economics.
- He is a member of the editorial board of the American Economic Review (since 2019). He has worked with the National Bureau of Economic Research (since 2010) and the Centre for Economic and Policy Research (since 2010).
- As of April 2022, the Hirsch index is 23 according to Google Scholar and 14 according to Scopus.
Expert and public activities
- In 2021, together with a group of Russian economists and political scientists, he co-authored the report “Stagnation-2” (edited by Kirill Rogov), in which the researchers analysed the state of the Russian economy, its prospects, and proposed methods for resuming growth.
- In April 2022, in a joint article with economist Sergei Guriev, he advocated an embargo on Russian energy imports as “the quickest way to deny Putin the ability to finance the war” because “any other policy option is likely to be more costly and dangerous.”
Awards
- 2014 – Finance & Development[en] magazine, published by the International Monetary Fund, included Oleg Itzhoki in its list of “25 economists under 45 who are shaping our views on the global economy”.
- 2015 – Sloan Fellowship.
- 2022 – John Bates Clark Medal for “fundamental contributions to both international finance and international trade”.
